Student Spotlight: Alik Galliamov

Alik Galliamov is a Master’s student at the Sydney Business School, University of Wollongong pursuing a dual degree in Business Analytics and Supply Chain Management. Originally from Russia, Alik's academic journey is fuelled by his passion for data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency. His move to Australia marked a bold step toward expanding his expertise, embracing new challenges, and exploring diverse experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

From Russia to UOW: Alik Galliamov’s journey of exploration and growth

Moving to a new country for higher education is a bold step, but for Alik Galliamov, it was a chance to blend technical expertise with a fresh perspective on business and analytics. Born and raised in Russia, Alik earned his bachelor’s degree in electronics and nano-electronics from Saint-Petersburg Electrotechnical University. However, his curiosity and ambition led him far beyond the confines of his original field.

The road to a Dual Master’s Degree

Alik always had a dream of studying in Australia, but choosing the right program was a challenge. While his background was deeply rooted in engineering and physics, he felt a strong desire to broaden his skill set. After much reflection, he discovered his passion for Business Analytics, a field that allows him to leverage data analysis to derive insights and support decision-making.

As he progressed in his studies, he became fascinated by subjects in Supply Chain Management. Seeing the synergy between the two disciplines, he made the bold decision to pursue a double master’s degree in Business Analytics and Supply Chain Management at the University of Wollongong (UOW) within two years.

Balancing academic and personal life

Between university, work, and personal interests, Alik often wished there were 50 hours in a day! However, he has found ways to make time for his existing hobbies while also embracing new ones. Living in Australia has introduced him to exciting activities like surfing and slacklining—both thrilling and challenging in their own ways. Though it remains a constant juggling act, the experience has been incredibly rewarding.

Overcoming challenges in a new education system

Adapting to the Australian education system was Alik’s biggest hurdle. The contrast was striking—while Russian universities focus heavily on lectures and lab experiments, Australian universities emphasise independent learning, self-study, and extensive reading. It took time to adjust, but ultimately, this approach helped him develop valuable self-discipline and research habits that will benefit him in the long run.

Staying connected to home

When asked what he misses most about Russia, Alik jokingly exclaims, “Russian winters—definitely not!” While he has built strong friendships in Australia, nothing compares to the deep connections he has with family and lifelong friends back home. Staying in touch is a priority, and he makes it a habit to connect with them through FaceTime, ensuring that no matter how far he is, his roots remain strong.

A fun discovery in Business Analytics

Alik’s journey at UOW has been filled with surprising insights, but one of his favorite fun facts from Business Analytics is the correlation between ice cream sales and shark attacks. Of course, as any good analyst knows, correlation does not imply causation! It’s these quirky, unexpected discoveries that make his learning experience more exciting.

Looking ahead: Career aspirations

Alik is actively exploring career opportunities in Australia, particularly in supply chain management. He is eager to gain hands-on experience in the field and is open to seeing where this path leads. The future is full of possibilities, and he’s excited to embrace them.

Words of advice for fellow students

Alik’s piece of advice that resonates with every student:

“Get out there! Studying is important, but this is also a unique time in your life. You’re in one of the best countries in the world—stay adventurous, explore, and make the most of it. Try new things, live fully, and enjoy every moment.”

And with a smile, he adds, “Just don’t forget—your studies matter too!”
